When we started dating and we had been together for a while my mom told the both of us that we couldn't get married until I was 25 or out of college. That seemed like FOREVER when you are 19, but in hindsight it made a lot of sense. Will and I always said we would wait until we were both out of college before getting married so we could hopefully get good jobs and be a little more settled before becoming "grown-ups" and starting the rest of our lives.
I was on my way home from graduation rehersal and Will must have called me 3 times on my way and all he kept asking was "where are you at?" and "how are you doing". There was construction on the parkway and I was sitting in stop and go traffic at 10:00pm at night, so by the third call I was getting adjitated.
When I finally got home, I had to unload the car - new cap and gown for the graduation ceremony the next day, and presents for my nephews 1st birthday party that Sunday. As I was walking up the stairs I could see a vase full of roses and a card waiting at the top for me. As I get settled I bring the flowers to the sink and begin to open the card.
Will gets on one knee and presents a ring and asks "Will you Marry Me?". And not just any ring! This ring was amazing and huge and...from a gumball machine!!! Will used to practice asking me to marry him with gumball machine rings throughout our entire relationship - it was really cute! So I started giggling to myself and said "Of course I'll marry you" and he said "OK, then you can have the real one" and pulled out my actual ring.
It was so sweet, and unexpected. I really thought he was going to ask me in July when we were in Myrtle Beach for our friends wedding, but he asked me the night before my college graduation - so he listened to my mom. |
