 | Introductions with Kurt were fleeting. He'd stop to see the Wagners each spring and fall as he headed up and down the coast. Of those pass through visits, we'd see him as crew for 3 hours on a few Wednesday nights. Kurt looked just like many of the other crewmembers on Der Baron, suntanned, sandy hair, dark glasses, boat shoes, and the signature red Der Baron shirt. Each week our crew met for dinner after the races and shared their stories. One sailor would help out at the Wagner's place, said he worked on cars, lived part-time in Florida, and part-time someplace cold. Another sailor would help out at the Wagner's place, said he sometimes lived in his car, part-time in Florida, and part-time someplace cold. It took me 4 years before Kurt's sister explained to me that the two similar stories were from two different guys! |
